Agripower Sportsturf Ltd is pleased to announce the recent completion of a new sports facility for the Ashcroft Technology Academy in Wandsworth.

The project, valued at £1.8m included the construction of a new pavilion, full size sand dressed ATP, 3 natural winter games pitches, cricket square, car parks and footpaths, perimeter/ballstop fencing, access gates and service infrastructure.

Pavilion

The pavilion building took Agripower into a new field of operation. The building consisted of 4 primary team changing rooms with integrated shower cubicles and toilets, 2 officials changing rooms, plant room, store, and kitchen and seating area.

Externally the building used a modern insulation material covered with 4 layer render, reducing running costs but also creating a simple clean exterior to the building. The roofing material was chosen for not only strength and appearance, but using an aluminium Kal-Zip system provided the client with a completely maintenance free exterior.

The building was then finished off with an intensive M+E package including off site monitoring systems, fire and intruder alarms, underfloor heating and air conditioning.

The building came in on time and on budget, an unusual concept for the construction industry and helps showcase Agripowers extensive management skills and resources.

Pitch works

Synthetic Turf Pitch

The site works consisted of the topsoil being stripped and stacked to enable the remodelling of the pitches. Unusually for London, large areas of running sand were encountered during the earth works for the STP which required remediation by soil stabilization. The sub-base was then drained and an attenuation tank was installed to help reduce the impact on the local storm drainage system.

The site was then overlaid with a geotextile and 200mm of Type 1x, a single layer of Macadam and a 15mm shockpad. The playing surface, Tiger Turf HT18 was chosen for durability and excellent play characteristics.

A 4.8mts high weldmesh fencing system to the full perimeter and a 15mtr high floodlighting system installed.

Natural Pitches

All 3 natural pitch areas were stripped of topsoil and graded using laser controlled equipment. During the topsoil replacement it became very evident that the topsoil was contaminated with glass and crockery fragments.

After consultation with the client and specialist consultants it was decided that the cost of removal and replacement was too great.

The solution was to replace the soil on the prepared subsoil and an intensive regime of stone burying with the screens set at 10mm spacing. The Pitches were then drained at 5m centres and stone buried again and then walked and hand picked prior to the final 100mm covering of 50/50 rootzone.

The pitches were then sown with Barenbrug Bar 7 and received an application of pre-seeding fertiliser.
